Updated 21 October 2026. Dates come from the organizers unless noted.
Short answer: Sweden’s Christmas market season 2026 opens with Liseberg in Gothenburg on 14 November. Gamla stan’s Stortorget market is listed from 21 November, Malmö and Kalmar Castle start on 26 November, and Skansen in Stockholm on 27 November. Many Swedish markets open only on Advent weekends, so check the days before you plan.
Swedish Christmas markets are smaller and calmer than the big German ones, and they’re full of things you won’t see elsewhere: smoked reindeer, saffron buns, straw goats and glögg with raisins and almonds. Here are the five I’d plan around, from Stockholm to the south.

Stockholm
Skansen’s Christmas market
Skansen, the open-air museum on Djurgården, has held its Christmas market since 1903. In 2026 it runs Friday to Sunday on four weekends, from 27 November to 20 December. Expect bonfires, stalls with food for the Christmas table and local crafts, and waffles, glögg and roasted almonds. Skansen’s entrances and shops are cash-free, and so are most of the market vendors, so bring a card. Children aged 0 to 15 get in free but need a free child ticket. If you’d rather sit down to the full Christmas buffet, Solliden inside Skansen serves a julbord with park entry included; see my guide to the Swedish julbord for 2026 dates and prices.
Stortorget in Gamla stan
The little square in the heart of the old town has Stockholm’s best-known city-center market, with red huts around the old well. Stockholm event guides list it from 21 November to 23 December 2026, daily from 11:00, with later closing on Fridays and Saturdays. I couldn’t confirm these dates on the organizer’s own website on 21 October, so check it again before you go.
Gothenburg
Christmas at Liseberg
Gothenburg’s amusement park turns into a winter world from 14 November to 30 December 2026, open on selected days. Gothenburg’s official tourism site calls it Sweden’s largest Christmas market, with about five million lights, around 2,000 Christmas trees, an alpine-style Tyrolean Market and Santa’s Village. It’s closed on 24 and 25 December. My Liseberg Christmas market 2026 guide lists every open day.
The south
Kalmar Castle
Kalmar’s Renaissance castle hosts a four-day Christmas fair from Thursday 26 to Sunday 29 November 2026. Entry is 100 kronor, and children under 12 get in free with a parent. Payment is by card or cash, and dogs are welcome in the courtyard but not inside the castle.
Malmö
Malmö’s Christmas market fills Gustav Adolfs torg Thursday to Sunday on all four Advent weekends, 11:00 to 18:00. The traders change from weekend to weekend, so a second visit can feel like a new market.
How I’d plan a Christmas trip
- Stockholm weekend: Skansen on Saturday, Gamla stan in the evening, and a Lucia concert if your dates include 12 or 13 December. See St. Lucia Day in Sweden.
- Two cities: Stockholm and Gothenburg are about 3 to 3.5 hours apart by SJ high-speed train. Plan Liseberg for a Friday or Saturday evening.
- Southern loop: Malmö on an Advent weekend, combined with Copenhagen across the Öresund Bridge.
