Hej! hi, the Swedish way

Plan your vacation in Sweden: Christmas, Lucia and Lapland

Hi, I’m Brian 👋 an American dad living in Bavaria who plans family trips around trains and good timing. Vacation in Sweden is my research desk for a first winter trip: the Christmas markets and Lucia in December, Stockholm with kids, Liseberg in Gothenburg and the northern lights up in Swedish Lapland. It’s written for families and couples, and every date, price and timetable is checked against the official source.

Every date checked against the official site · Lucia on Sunday 13 December 2026 · Updated November 2026

Short answer: Winter is a wonderful time for a first Sweden trip. Christmas at Liseberg in Gothenburg opens on 14 November 2026, Skansen’s Christmas market in Stockholm on 27 November, and Lucia is celebrated on Sunday 13 December. Up north, the Aurora Sky Station in Abisko runs evening visits from 19 October 2026 to 27 March 2027.

Where to go in Sweden

  • Stockholm: the capital, spread over islands, with Gamla stan, the Vasa Museum and Skansen. See Stockholm in winter with kids.
  • Gothenburg: the west-coast city, home of Liseberg, about 3 to 3.5 hours from Stockholm by SJ high-speed train.
  • Malmö and the south: across the bridge from Copenhagen, with a Christmas market on Gustav Adolfs torg. See Christmas markets in Sweden.
  • Kalmar and the southeast: a Renaissance castle on the coast, with a big Christmas fair in late November.
  • Swedish Lapland: Kiruna, Abisko and the Icehotel, far above the Arctic Circle. See Abisko vs Kiruna.

Getting around Sweden

By train: SJ runs the main intercity lines, including high-speed trains between Stockholm and Gothenburg and the night train north to Kiruna and Abisko.

In Stockholm: SL runs the metro, buses, commuter trains and the Djurgården ferry. A single ticket costs 43 kronor and is valid for 75 minutes, and a 24-hour ticket costs 180 kronor. Children under 7 ride free with someone who has a valid ticket.

From Arlanda airport: the Arlanda Express reaches Stockholm Central in 18 minutes. Children up to 7 travel free with an adult, and kids 8 to 17 travel free with an adult aged 26 or older.

Paying: Sweden is close to cashless. Skansen’s entrances and shops, for example, don’t take cash at all. Bring a card with no foreign transaction fees.
