Gothenburg at Christmas: Liseberg’s Christmas Market 2026

Updated 21 October 2026. Open days and hours are from Liseberg; descriptions from Gothenburg’s official tourism site.

Short answer: Christmas at Liseberg in Gothenburg runs on selected days from Saturday 14 November to Wednesday 30 December 2026. Saturdays are usually 12:00 to 22:00, Sundays 12:00 to 20:00, and most weekdays start at 15:00. The park is closed on 24 and 25 December, and you need a park entry ticket.

Liseberg is Gothenburg’s big amusement park, right in the city. Every winter it turns into what Gothenburg’s tourism office calls Sweden’s largest Christmas market, with about five million lights, around 2,000 Christmas trees, several themed markets and winter rides. If you’re in Sweden in Advent and can get to the west coast, I think it’s the most fun Christmas evening in the country for families. Here’s everything for 2026.

The park is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays in November and early December, and on 24 and 25 December. Note that Liseberg’s own list shows “29 Dec” between 28 November and 2 December, which looks like a typo for 29 November. I’ve shown it as Sunday 29 November.

What’s at Christmas at Liseberg

Gothenburg’s official tourism site describes several Christmas markets around the park, each with its own setting:

  • A wintry Nordic market with ice skating.
  • An old-fashioned Christmas market with decorated stalls.
  • The Tyrolean Market, with an alpine feel, après-ski, spiced drinks and a big Christmas pyramid in the middle.
  • Santa’s Village, where the Christmas elves get ready for the big day and invite visitors of all ages to join in.

Add winter rides, Christmas food and the lights after dark, and it’s easy to spend a whole evening. 🎄

Food and drinks

Expect Swedish Christmas classics around the markets: glögg (also alcohol-free), gingerbread, saffron buns and hot dishes for the cold. Liseberg’s exhibitor rules ask traders to stay open on every market day, so the stalls you see on a weekday should be the same ones as on a weekend.

Rides in winter

Not every ride runs in winter, and the rides need their own ticket or ride pass on top of entry. Check Liseberg’s website for which rides are open at Christmas before promising the kids a specific roller coaster.

Tickets

Liseberg says tickets for Christmas 2026 go on sale in November, and the park sells tickets online at a lower price than at the gate. Buy online before you go.

If you live nearby or plan more than one visit within a year, Liseberg also sells an annual entry pass, the Lisebergspasset, for 395 kronor. Check that it covers the Christmas season before you buy it for that.

How to plan your evening

  • Arrive before dark. On a weekday the park opens at 15:00, and the sun sets early in Gothenburg in December. Arriving at opening time gives you a little daylight, then the lights come on.
  • Pick a weekday if you can. Wednesdays and Thursdays have shorter hours but fewer people than Saturdays.
  • Start with Santa’s Village if you have little ones, before they get tired.
  • Eat in the park. There are plenty of Christmas food stalls, so you don’t need to plan a separate dinner. If you want a sit-down Christmas buffet instead, Liseberg’s pre-booked julbord includes park entry. Menus and 2026 prices are in my Swedish julbord guide.
  • Dress warm. You’ll be outdoors for hours, and the west coast wind can be cold and damp.

A sample evening with kids

Here’s how I’d plan a Friday at Liseberg in December with two kids, using the 15:00 to 22:00 hours:

  1. 15:00: arrive at opening, buy a hot chocolate and walk the park once while there’s still some daylight.
  2. 15:45: Santa’s Village first, before the little ones get tired.
  3. 16:30: the lights are on. Time for the ice rink or a couple of rides.
  4. 17:30: dinner from the food stalls, somewhere warm.
  5. 18:30: the Tyrolean Market and the Christmas pyramid, then a slow wander through the old-fashioned market for gifts.
  6. 19:30: one last ride, then the tram back to the hotel before bedtime.

On a Saturday you can start earlier, at 12:00, and split the day with a break at the hotel.

Liseberg or Skansen?

If you only have time for one Swedish Christmas market, here’s how the two big ones compare:

Both are wonderful. Liseberg is the one for an evening of lights, and Skansen the one for a daytime tradition.

What to wear

  • Warm, waterproof boots. Paths can be wet or icy.
  • A hat and gloves for everyone, and a scarf for the windy west coast.
  • Layers you can open when you go indoors to eat.
  • A small backpack for gifts and extra mittens.

Getting to Liseberg

Liseberg is in central Gothenburg, a short tram ride from the central station to Korsvägen, next to the park. From Stockholm, SJ’s high-speed trains take about 3 to 3.5 hours to Gothenburg, which makes an overnight trip easy.

Combining Liseberg with the rest of Sweden

  • Two cities: Stockholm’s Skansen and Gamla stan markets one weekend, Liseberg the next. All the dates are in Christmas markets in Sweden 2026.
  • Lucia weekend: Liseberg is open on 11, 12 and 13 December, the same weekend as Lucia. See St. Lucia Day in Sweden.
  • After Christmas: Liseberg reopens from 26 to 30 December, one of the few big Christmas events in Sweden that runs between Christmas and New Year.
