Updated 21 October 2026. Concert dates and times are from Skansen, Stockholm Cathedral’s music office and Destination Uppsala.
Short answer: St. Lucia Day in Sweden is 13 December, which falls on a Sunday in 2026. Lucia leads a procession in white with candles in her hair, followed by singers and star boys. In Stockholm, Skansen holds Lucia concerts in Seglora Church on 12 and 13 December, and Stockholm Cathedral hosts concerts from 6 to 13 December.
Lucia is the Swedish tradition I’d most want my boys to see. In the darkest weeks of the year, the lights go out in a church or a school hall, and you hear the singing before you see anything. Then a line of children and young people in white gowns walks in slowly with candles, led by Lucia wearing a crown of lights. It’s quiet, beautiful and very Swedish. Here’s what happens, what to eat, and where you can see a Lucia procession as a visitor in 2026.

What is Lucia?
Visit Sweden describes Lucia as one of the country’s most loved traditions, as much a part of Swedish culture as midsummer. It’s named after Saint Lucia of Syracuse, a 4th-century martyr. According to legend, she brought food to Christians hiding in the catacombs and wore a wreath of candles on her head to light the way.
The date has an old meaning too. In the Julian calendar, 13 December was the shortest day of the year, and in Swedish folklore the long night was a dangerous time. Staying awake and eating helped, which is one reason food is still part of the day. Lucia’s first recorded appearance in a Swedish home was in 1764, but the tradition really took hold in the 1900s.
What happens at a Lucia procession
A Lucia procession, called a luciatåg, usually follows the same pattern:
- Lucia leads, in a white gown with a red sash and a crown of candles.
- Handmaidens follow in white, each holding a candle.
- Star boys wear white gowns and tall pointed hats with stars.
- Gingerbread figures and little elves are often added by the youngest kids.
They walk in slowly while singing, starting with the song “Sankta Lucia”, and finish with Swedish Christmas songs. Visit Sweden says processions take place in kindergartens, schools, care homes, churches and offices across the country, and they’re broadcast on national TV. Traditionally Lucia appears before dawn, but many public events happen at dusk for practical reasons. ✨
What to eat on Lucia
- Lussekatter: S-shaped saffron buns with raisins, the taste of the whole season. Bakeries sell them from late November.
- Pepparkakor: thin, crisp gingerbread cookies.
- Glögg: hot spiced wine with raisins and almonds. Alcohol-free glögg is easy to find for kids.
- Coffee: of course. Lucia morning is basically a very early fika.
Where to see Lucia in Stockholm in 2026
Lucia is held all over Sweden, but most events at schools, offices and care homes aren’t for the public. For visitors, these are the reliable options with published 2026 dates.
Skansen: Seglora Church
Skansen, the open-air museum on Djurgården, holds Lucia concerts in its 18th-century wooden Seglora Church. Each concert lasts about 30 minutes, and you need a separate ticket on top of park entry.
| Date | Times |
|---|---|
| Sat 12 Dec 2026 | 11:00, 13:00, 14:30, 16:00 |
| Sun 13 Dec 2026 | 11:00, 13:00, 14:30, 16:00 |
Skansen says ticket booking and the full program will be published later, so check back on its website. The Christmas market at Skansen is also open on that weekend (11 to 13 December), so you can easily combine the two. Children aged 0 to 15 get into Skansen free with a free child ticket.
Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrkan)
The cathedral in Gamla stan holds a series of concerts called “Möt Lucia” (Meet Lucia). Tickets cost 110 to 305 kronor.
| Date | Times |
|---|---|
| Sun 6 Dec | 15:00, 17:00 |
| Tue 8 Dec | 20:00 |
| Wed 9 Dec | 18:00 |
| Thu 10 Dec | 18:00, 20:00 |
| Fri 11 Dec | 18:00, 20:00 |
| Sat 12 Dec | 13:00, 15:00, 17:00, 19:30 |
| Sun 13 Dec | 15:00, 17:00, 19:30, 21:30 |
Storkyrkan is right next to Stortorget, so an afternoon concert and an evening at the Gamla stan Christmas market fit together nicely.
Uppsala Cathedral
Uppsala, a short train ride north of Stockholm, has Sweden’s largest cathedral and some of its best-known Lucia concerts. Destination Uppsala lists 2026 concerts on 13 December at 17:00 and 19:00, and on 14 December at 19:00. Each lasts about an hour, and you need a paid ticket from the cathedral.
Tips for seeing Lucia as a visitor
- Book early. Weekend concerts on 12 and 13 December are the most popular, and 2026’s Lucia falls on a Sunday.
- Arrive early. A good view matters for a procession, and the walk in is the best part.
- Keep the flash off. The whole point is candlelight in the dark, and phones on silent are a kindness to everyone.
- Bring the kids. Afternoon concerts are a great fit for children, and seeing other kids in the procession is half the magic.
- Watch on TV too. If you’re in a hotel on the morning of 13 December, turn on Swedish TV for the national Lucia broadcast.
A Lucia weekend in Stockholm, 2026
Here’s how I’d use the weekend of 12 and 13 December:
- Saturday 12 December: Skansen in the morning, with the Christmas market (open 10:00 to 17:00) and the 13:00 Lucia concert in Seglora Church. In the evening, take the ferry back and walk through Gamla stan.
- Sunday 13 December (Lucia Day): lussekatter for breakfast, then the 15:00 “Möt Lucia” concert at Storkyrkan, and the Stortorget market afterwards, right next door.
- Or go to Uppsala: take the train north for the 17:00 Lucia concert in Uppsala Cathedral, and be back in Stockholm for a late dinner.
Lucia outside Stockholm
Lucia happens in every Swedish town, but published visitor events vary from year to year. If you’re spending December in Gothenburg, check Liseberg’s program and the city’s churches. In smaller towns, the local Church of Sweden parish calendar is the place to look. I’d also ask your hotel: many hotels and restaurants have their own Lucia procession on the morning of 13 December.
How Lucia fits into a December trip
Lucia sits right in the middle of Christmas market season. In 2026, Skansen’s market is open from 11 to 13 December, Malmö’s from 10 to 13 December and Liseberg on most days that week. All the dates are in Christmas markets in Sweden 2026, and for planning days in the capital with children, see Stockholm in winter with kids.
